Baseball Bat Size Guide

Baseball Bat Selection Guide

Choosing the right baseball bat is one of the most important decisions a player can make. A correctly sized bat helps develop good hitting mechanics, improves confidence and ultimately leads to better performance at the plate.

There is no perfect formula for selecting a bat. Height, weight and age charts are useful starting points, but the only real way to determine the correct bat is for the player to swing it.

Ideally, a player should use the heaviest bat they can comfortably swing while still maintaining good bat speed and proper hitting mechanics.

Understanding Weight vs Bat Speed

Every player is trying to find the balance between bat speed and power.

  • A lighter bat is easier to swing and generally produces greater bat speed.
  • A heavier bat can generate more power, but only if the player is strong enough to swing it correctly.

The goal is to find the combination that allows the player to swing quickly while still driving the ball with authority.

Remember that selecting a bat isn't simply a case of "bigger player = bigger bat." Strength, coordination, swing mechanics and experience all play an important role.

Choosing the Wrong Bat

If a bat is too heavy, players often:

  • Lose bat speed.
  • Drop the barrel below the ball.
  • Arrive late through the hitting zone.
  • Develop poor swing mechanics as they compensate for the extra weight.
  • Become frustrated because solid contact becomes difficult.

If a bat is too light, players may:

  • Swing too early and get out in front of the ball.
  • Generate less power on contact.
  • Develop timing issues when progressing to heavier bats in older age groups.

The right bat should feel comfortable, allow the player to maintain control throughout the swing and consistently make solid contact.

How do you know if the bat is too heavy or light?

Swing the bat

There are many age and height charts around but these give little regard to a player’s actual ability to swing the bat. Our expertise developed over many years of coaching advanced levels and selling bats tells us that swinging the bat is the best method to choose the right size.

You can hear the bat make a whooshing sound as the bat moves at high speed through the air when you get good bat speed. Younger players might struggle to make this sound as they simply cannot swing the bat hard enough. When this is the case it's best to choose a bat that the player can control with the best swing mechanincs.

While a heavy bat will produce slower bat speeds and swing compensation (dropping of hands, swinging under the ball etc).

A bat that is too light will produce slower bat speeds as the player over muscles the swing, resulting in hand rollover, lunging and other bad swing mechanincs.

Start with a heavier and longer bat and work your way down in size and lengths until you can “hear” good velocity. Most clubs will provide each team with a couple of bats. We suggest starting with them and making a note of the length and weight.

Recommended Bat Sizes

These recommendations should be used as a starting point only. Individual players may require a different length or weight depending on their strength and hitting ability.

Tee Ball

Tee Ball bats are available in shorter and lighter sizes.

Bat Lengths

Bats are available in 24”, 25” & 26” lengths and the weight differential insert link ranges from -10 (heaviest) to -13 (lightest).

Typical Age Guide

24" — 4–5 years

25" — 5–6 years

26" — 6+ years

The bat should feel light enough that young players can swing confidently without losing balance or dropping the barrel.

Note: Tee Ball bats are specifically designed for use with Tee Balls. Using regular baseballs can damage the bat and void the warranty.

SHOP TEE BALL BATS

Zooka / Coach Pitch

USA Certified

Recommended Lengths are 27”, 28” & 29” with a weight differential of -10 or -11.

As players begin hitting pitched balls, bat control becomes increasingly important. A bat that is too heavy will slow the swing and make it harder to consistently square up the ball.

SHOP USA CERTIFIED BATS

Little League / Under 12

USA Certified

Bats best suited to this age group include 29”, 30”, 31” & 32” with a suggested weight differential of -10 or -11

Players at this level should prioritise bat speed and developing good hitting mechanics rather than using the biggest bat possible.

SHOP USA CERTIFIED BATS

Intermediate League (IL) / Junior League (JL) / Under 14

There is a smaller range of lengths suited to this cohort being 30”, 31” & 32” but there is a larger range of weight differentials, -10, -8 or -5

Players at the younger or smaller end of this age group will often perform better with a -10 or -8 bat as they transition into larger field dimensions.

Larger, stronger and more physically developed players should comfortably handle a 32" -5 bat and will benefit from the additional mass if they can maintain good bat speed.

SHOP USA CERTIFIED BATS

Senior League / Under 16 / Adult

BBCOR (-3) Certified

Recommended Length* 30"–34"

Players required to use BBCOR bats should choose the longest length that still allows them to maintain excellent bat speed and barrel control.

Smaller players often perform best with a 30" or 31" BBCOR bat, while average-sized high school players commonly use 32" or 33" bats. Taller, stronger and fully developed adult players may prefer a 34" bat.

SHOP BBCOR BASEBALL BATS

Note: The BBCOR standard is now being administered by USA Baseball and there will be some changes in 2027. Bats available form 1st June 2027 will have a new certification mark. There will be a transition period to allow for use of bats with the current certification mark for several more years.

Final Tips

When choosing between two bats, don't simply buy the bigger one because the player will "grow into it." A bat that is too large can slow development and encourage poor mechanics.

Instead, choose the bat that allows the player to:

  • Swing with confidence.
  • Maintain good bat speed.
  • Consistently hit the ball on the barrel.
  • Develop sound hitting mechanics that will continue to improve as they move into heavier bats.
