Tee Ball is a modified version of Baseball or Softball that is played on a smaller diamond with simplified rules and is intended for players aged 4-8 years old. Rather than a pitcher, the ball is hit off a stand known as a Tee, or Batting Tee. This enables young players to concentrate on a stationary ball rather than trying to hit a moving target. A softer ball is used so players can confidently attempt to make plays without fear of injury.

What equipment do you need for Tee Ball?
Bat
Tee Ball bats are designed to be shorter and lighter than standard junior baseball bats, making them easier for young players to control. Although a bat is required for play, most clubs supply bats for general use, so purchasing your own is optional. If you choose to buy one, we can provide recommendations to help you get started. These recommendations should be viewed as general guidance only. The most suitable bat length and weight will depend on each player’s individual strength, swing mechanics, and hitting ability. In all honesty you can safely choose a bat that your child likes the look of, baseball is about fun after all. All Red Stitches tball bats carry the "USA Baseball" approved marking.
Bat Lengths
Bats are available in 24”, 25” & 26” lengths and the weight differential insert link ranges from -10 (heaviest) to -13 (lightest).
Typical Age Guide
24" — 4–5 years
25" — 5–6 years
26" — 6+ years
The bat should feel light enough that young players can swing confidently without losing balance or dropping the barrel.
Note: Tee Ball bats are specifically designed for use with Tee Balls. Using regular baseballs can damage the bat and void the warranty.
Glove
Each player requires their own fielding glove, although some clubs provide them as part of registration. Most Tee Ball gloves are made from synthetic materials to reduce weight and cost, while lightweight leather options offer greater durability and often feature a heel notch that improves the glove’s hinge and closing action. Standard Tee Ball glove sizes run from 9 to 10.5 inches. A smaller glove generally gives young players better control, so selecting the right size comes down to how easily the player can handle and close the glove.

Helmet
A batting helmet is essential for Tee Ball and must be worn whenever a player is batting or running the bases. While some clubs provide a small number of shared team helmets, it’s usually best for players to have their own. A personal helmet offers a more secure, comfortable fit, which helps young players feel confident at the plate. It’s also far more hygienic, as shared helmets can accumulate sweat, dirt, and general wear over the season. When choosing a helmet, look for one that fits snugly without wobbling and meets the relevant safety standards for junior baseball or Tee Ball. All Red Stitches helmets are NOCSAE approved.

Cleats
Cleats look much like athletic runners but feature moulded rubber lugs on the bottom to improve traction. This added grip helps prevent slips when players accelerate, stop, or round the bases. For Tee Ball, cleats must have moulded TPU soles, as metal cleats are considered unsafe and are not permitted until the Under‑16 age group. Sizing for cleats aligns with standard US children’s shoe sizes, so selecting a pair is as simple as matching your child’s current runner size.
Bag
While not required, a gear bag is a convenient way to keep everything organised for training and game day. Most prefer backpack‑style baseball bags because they’re comfortable to carry, leave both hands free, and are designed specifically for the sport. These backpacks typically include a dedicated bat sleeve, allowing players to safely and easily carry their baseball bat along with the rest of their equipment.
Batting Gloves
Batting gloves aren’t required for Tee Ball, but they can improve comfort and control at the plate. They help young players maintain a secure grip on the bat and can reduce irritation or blistering during repeated swings. Sizing can be tricky, especially for smaller hands, as youth gloves often differ in fit and flexibility. Refer to our batting glove buying guide for help on sizing.
Protective Cup
A protective cup is an essential piece of safety equipment for boys in Tee Ball. While it’s possible to use a standalone cup with regular underwear, it can often be uncomfortable. Purpose‑built children’s underwear with a cup pouch offers a better solution by keeping the cup stable and comfortable throughout training and games. Cups come in age appropriate sizes and the underwear use a standard waist size. As players progress through the age groups, they typically transition to sliders - compression shorts designed with a dedicated pouch for the cup. Sliders may be sold with a cup included or as a separate component, depending on the brand.
